What We're Reading is KAXE's show all about books.

"What We're Reading" producer and host Tammy Bobrowsky celebrates KAXE's 50 years with a look back into the archives. Favorites include John Green, Jess Lourey, Byron Graves and more.

KAXE is turning 50! Fifty years of connecting our northern Minnesota communities with music, news, local stories and books!

What We’re Reading rolled out in 2015 following Heidi Holtan’s footsteps with Realgoodwords, which started around 2001. And don’t forget Pine River librarian Marlys O’Brien could be heard on the airwaves before that. Clearly, book talk has been an important part of KAXE through the decades.

To celebrate KAXE’s 50th, I dug into the archives of What We’re Reading for some of my favorite interviews—not realizing how impossible this would be. I’ve interviewed hundreds of writers and book people, from nationally renowned authors to writers from our own back yard, and I have gotten something special from each conversation: from humor and comfort and kinship to insight, curiosity, and wonder--in short, all the things that make us human.

Happy birthday KAXE! And thank you to our listeners and especially our members for making all of this possible and being a part of this amazing community. Here’s to many more years of music, news, conversation, learning, and of course, books.

Some interviews referenced in this segment:

John Green is the award-winning, bestselling author of novels including Looking for Alaska, The Fault in Our Stars, and Turtles All the Way Down. He’s…
"The Taken Ones" has detectives searching for connections between a woman found buried alive and two girls who vanished decades ago in a small Minnesota town.
"Rez Ball" is based on writer Byron Graves' adolescence while growing up and playing basketball on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
Brainerd English teacher, Misty Jobe, and author Will Weaver from Bemidj, talk about what appears to be a shortage of new books for middle grade boys and young adults that speak to the midwest experience.
