Having just released "Borned In Ya," Melissa Carper is a musician with a passion for old music who thrives with collaboration, including Sad Daddy and the newly formed Wonder Women of Country.

Recently, I attended AmericanaFest in Nashville, a gathering for all in the music industry — musicians, record labels, radio stations, festivals, agents and more — to help keep the Americana genre alive and thriving.

During that week, I was able to sit down with several musicians at a studio for conversations along with intimate and stripped-down performances you'll hear on KAXE.

KAXE Music Director Kari Hedlund in conversation with Melissa Carper at AmericanaFest 2024.

Melissa Carper

A musician with many side projects, many of which have been played at KAXE, Melissa Carper’s music carries a nostalgic feel, heavily influenced by her deep-rooted love for old music.

Her solo work and being a member of Sad Daddy, Buffalo Gals Band, The Carper Family and the newly formed Wonder Women of Country with Brennen Leigh and Kelly Willis, reflects Carper’s love for collaboration. It also shows her dedication to maintaining authenticity in her work, regardless of stylistic shifts, is central to her creative journey.

"Just being inspired by other writers and getting to sing harmony, you know, those are some of my favorite things," Carper said. "So, yeah, I love it. I love being a part of a band.”
