Music is personal. And sometimes you hear a musician that writes so personally, it seems they are in the same room as you, telling you those stories.
John R. Miller is an Americana musician that does just that. His grounded songwriting tells you that his life is real, his experiences are true and that he's not much different from you and me.
Heat Comes Down is his latest album and is a collection of songs that blend storytelling, humor, nostalgia, living with intention and empathy.
'Smokestacks on the Skyline' makes you wonder if you've just listened to the next John Prine; familiar and warm with spoken-style lyrics. 'Crumbling Pie' is a standout track steeped in folk storytelling that also dabbles in psychedelia. The album ends with 'Press On', a song with a simple message about how you've got to keep going, even when times are tough.
In his songwriting, Miller strikes that balance of tapping into a familiar and genuine warmth while definitely steeped in the present world.
