GRAND RAPIDS — Skarlett Woods will be releasing her new album, Letters to the West, on Oct. 27, 2023.

The singer-songwriter, who grew up in Brainerd and is back living there after years spent on the West Coast, stopped by KAXE’s Studio X to play songs from the upcoming album.

Brainerd singer-songwriter Skarlett Woods.

She began with “Me, I, Me, Me,” a song that won her the 2023 Dylan Fest Songwriting Contest.

“It’s about greed and selfishness,” Woods said.

Between songs, Woods spoke about the new music and the winding road her career has taken.

Many of the songs on Letters to the West will be related to different places she has lived.

“Portland, Santa Cruz,” Woods said, “Stanley, Idaho, and Lotus, California, are going to show up.”

During her time living on the West Coast, Woods also embarked on a cross-country bike trip from Oregon to Massachusetts, ending at Walden Pond.

“I wanted to see where Henry David Thoreau wrote his Walden Pond book.”

The well-traveled singer wrapped up her Studio X performance with “You and I,” another unreleased song due out in October.

Woods will be performing 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at Rapids Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids.

Listen to both live songs and the complete interview above.
