The sun rose on extensive damage in Bemidji on June 21, 2025. Destructive storms with wind gusts over 100 miles per hour moved through the area in the early morning hours.

The College of St. Scholastica, Bemidji State University and the Bemidji Long-Term Storm Recovery Group are launching a community-based research study to learn about how the 2025 derecho affected people.

Almost a year has passed since the June 2025 derecho that passed through Northern Minnesota, and community members are still dealing with the aftermath.

While many continue to address the physical ramifications, such as missing trees or building repairs, others may be experiencing the mental effects, like the fear of another storm or mental exhaustion.

The College of St. Scholastica, Bemidji State University and the Bemidji Long-Term Storm Recovery Group are launching a community-based research study to learn about how the storm affected people. They want to learn what services were helpful, which needs went unmet and the mental well-being of the community.

Community members who are 18 or older, live in Bemidji and were affected by the June 2025 derecho are invited to participate in the research study by visiting the website.
