Chelsea Pusc and her dog Charlie can't wait for the opening of the Deer River Dog Park.

Plans are underway for a dog park in Deer River. Chelsea Pusc is leading the charge to raise funds, including a brunch fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 19, 2025, at the Deer River Vets Club.

DEER RIVER — When Chelsea Pusc moved to Deer River over a year ago, she knew she wanted to give back to the community. It's just part of who she is.

"It was kind of in my longer term plan, like a three-year plan to maybe open a dog park or figure out funding for a dog park in Deer River, because I saw the need for it right away already," Pusc said in a recent "Bright Spot" conversation on the KAXE Morning Show.

But things have moved faster than expected. Over $10,000 has already been raised by the community. The city of Deer River donated an acre of land, with plans for them to maintain the park as well.

The Deer River Dog Park will be located within the Robert A. Lundeen Community Recreation Area, just off Highway 6 on the north side of town.

There are cash donation boxes for the project at various Deer River businesses and some businesses are offering customers the option of rounding up their bill. There will be a waffle brunch fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Deer River Vets Club. Donations may also be made through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation.

The biggest expense will be for 850 feet of fencing. Funds will also be used for benches, trash cans and signage.

Dog parks are a great way for dogs to interact with each other, but they are also a chance for humans to meet new people and connect with their community.

Pusc told us her dog Charlie has already gotten familiar with the new space.

"He starts to whine as we turn down the road [to the park.] He knows it's his place now," Pusc said.
