Open water fishing season is here in Northern Minnesota! We want to hear your memorable fishing experiences for our Question of the Week.

As we approach summer, some folks' thoughts turn to fishing.

Whether you love it, or simply tolerated it in your younger days, we want to hear about your fishing memories.

Here's what we heard

Carol Ann from North Carolina shared a memory from a guided fishing trip near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildnerness when she was 8 years old.

She said, "As I was so little, a fishing rod was not rented for me. I made due with my cane fishing pole. It was a slow fishing morning, but I got a bite, and was very excited as I pulled the fish to the side of the boat. The guide got the net and I had landed a northern pike that was as long as I was tall."

Liberty from Fosston texted: "I finally got to go to Canada with my great uncle and his cousin for a fishing trip. It started with my uncle realizing he grabbed the wrong tent. He grabbed the old one that was sitting in his garage for years, and the cords inside the poles kept snapping making it hard to set up.

"Fishing started slow. The second day out, we asked my uncle if we had enough gas for where we were going. (He said) in the most Minnesotan accent, 'Oh ya, we'll be good!' We're chugging along the lake and the boat stops. We indeed were not good and out of gas. I assumed he brought an extra can on board (it wasn't his first time running out of gas...).

"He did have more, but it was sitting back at camp. I could tell my uncle's cousin was a bit annoyed, as they sat in silence for a while. It was hot, so I sat with my flannel draped over my head like a little tent. Someone eventually came to our rescue."

Robert remembered fishing with his grandpa as a preteen. He said, "We were trolling in the pontoon, middle of a sunny day. I was sound asleep, fishing rod somewhat in hand. I caught some 'weeds' that woke me up, and as I was reeling in the weeds my grandpa yells, 'That’s a fish!' It was an almost 28-inch walleye. My biggest walleye ever, even to this day. I think he was just as happy as I was."

Marianne remembered fishing on the shore of Lake Winnibigoshish with lots of kids, including a cousin. She wrote, "The kids were all casting out into the lake, having a great time. My cousin cast out and her hook caught in my eyelid! It easily came out, so it wasn't so bad. Of course, while I was waiting for her dad to remove the hook, I thought I would lose my eye. I still call her 'Fishhook' 45 years later."

Craig from Effie said, "Sounds mundane for a fish story, but it’s the feeling of pushing away from the dock for a day on the water. Gets me every time."

You can listen to a conversation from the KAXE Morning Show above about bait possibilities, including kernels of corn (which was also mentioned by listener Linda!). Andrew Dziengel, Heather Johnson and Jen Kellen also talked about finding shoes in the woods and how dangerous it could be if Andrew saw a gummy worm dangling in the water.

Speaking of danger, always remember to wear your life jacket while out on a boat and follow water safety protocols.
