BEMIDJI — No-kill animal shelter Great River Rescue will soon host its annual Furr Bowl fundraiser.
Opened in 1977 as Beltrami Humane Society, the shelter has served the Bemidji area as a no-kill shelter for cats and dogs ever since. They serve around 300 animals per year.
Executive Director Marina Lovell recently joined the KAXE Morning Show to talk about the shelter, its Pet Fixers clinics and the upcoming fundraiser.
Great River Rescue’s Furr Bowl fundraiser is 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Bemidji Bowl. The event dates back to 2006 and has become a fun community tradition. The team that raises the most money receives a Puppy or Kitten-Gram.
“We can bring puppies or kittens to your place of work or a party,” Lovell explained.
While puppies and kittens can be adorable, too many animals can be problematic. Great River Rescue offers their Pet Fixers clinic one weekend per month from April through November for qualified low-income pet owners and caretakers.
The surgeries are done in a specially designed trailer, located at Great River Rescue on Carr Lake Road.
“A vet and two or three vet techs from around the state come up to Bemidji and spend the weekend spaying and neutering dogs and cats," Lovell said.
