Events this week include the Lumberjack Jaunt in Brainerd, an orchestra concert in Grand Rapids and a talk on light pollution at the Sax-Zim Bog.

It's another busy week in Northern Minnesota. Here are some events to check out:

Monday, March 3

  • Friends of the Brainerd Library Brown Bag author series - noon at the Brainerd Public Library. Timothy Cochrane will discuss his book Making the Carry: The Lives of John and Tchi-Ki-Wis Linklater.

Wednesday, March 5

  • Scam detection seminar - 1 p.m. at the Bemidji Senior Center. Sheriff Jason Riggs and Val Mattison will help you discover the ways scammers attempt to defraud older adults.

Thursday, March 6

  • Itasca Waters' Practical Water Wisdom webinar - noon. This month's topic is lakeshore development and natural shoreline protection

Friday, March 7

  • Itasca Waters' Practical Water Wisdom webinar - noon. A bonus webinar this month about this year's ice-out forecast.
  • Light pollution presentation - noon at the Sax-Zim Bog.
  • Open Mic & Coffeehouse - 6:30 p.m. at Headwaters Music and Arts in Bemidji. The featured performers for March are folk trio Caleigh.
  • First Friday Art Walk - 4 to 7 p.m. at various location in Grand Rapids.
  • "The Universe at the Symphony" - 7 p.m. at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids. I

Saturday, March 8

  • Lumberjack Jaunt - 11a.m. registration at Northland Arboretum in Brainerd. Due to lack of snow, there will not be timed ski races. Instead, there will be an introduction to the sport of orienteering at 11:15 a.m., a group hike at noon, and a light meal at 1 p.m.
  • Art is HERstory series - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beltrami County History Center in Bemidji. Anishinaabe artist Melissa Fowler will demonstrate her bead work and birch bark techniques and give an artist talk at 11 a.m.
  • Brooms of Glory - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cotton Beach in Coleraine. A broom ball tournament featuring local police, firefighters, and EMS to support Itasca Ironsides Special Olympics.
  • "New Belongings" poetry reading - 2 p.m. at Bemidji Public Library, featuring LM Brimmer, Halee Kirkwood and Sherrie Fernandez-Williams will share space, knowledge and stories around the theme of belonging.
  • Annual Steak Chili Feed - 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Bemidji Eagles Club, in celebration of 25 years of the Gordy Buchanan Memorial Range. $10 for all you can eat chili & cornbread.
  • "Heart to Art" Instructor Showcase and annual fundraiser for Headwaters Music & Arts - 5 p.m. at Fourth Street Lodge in Bemidji. Full details and tickets.
  • Bemidji Contra Dance - 6:30 p.m. at Rail River Folk School. All dances will be taught by the caller with live music from the O'Neil Family Band. No experience or partners needed.
  • Itasca Pride presents The Vagina Monologues - 7 p.m. in the Ives Studio Theater at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids

Sunday, March 9

  • Breakfast buffet- 9 a.m. to noon at Buck Lake Improvement Club, located 12 miles north of Nashwauk on Highway 65. They are celebrating St. Patrick's Day a wee bit early, so be sure to wear green!
