The Minnesota Northwoods Writers Conference director Sean Hill talks about the conference which is held annually on the shores of Lake Bemidji and gives a rundown on the featured authors who will be reading their work during the free evening sessions.

BEMIDJI — Since 2003, acclaimed writers and those who want to improve their writing have been invited to the Minnesota Northwoods Writers Conference at Bemidji State University to work together and talk craft on the shores of Lake Bemidji.

While attendees work closely with the writing faculty on writing projects during the day, faculty reading sessions will be each night of the gathering and these are free and open to the public.

The first reading session will feature poets.

Conference Director Sean Hill, who schedules the readings, noted, “I always think it’s a good way to open a conference — with poets. Also that’s my bias as a poet.”

Hill is a published poet himself and teaches creative writing at the University of Montana, but has been director of the Minnesota Northwoods Writers conference since 2012.

The evening reading series will be each night at 7:30 p.m. in the American Indian Resource Center at Bemidji State University and will feature the following writers:

  • Tuesday, June 20:  Keetje Kuipers and Lia Purpura;
  • Wednesday, June 21: Diane Wilson and a published MNWC writer;
  • Thursday, June 22: Visiting Writers Heid Erdrich and Sun Yung Shin;
  • Friday, June 23: Will Weaver and a published MNWC writer; and
  • Saturday, June 24: Aimee Nezhukumatathil and Ross Gay.
