Classroom Observations of the Natural World

Tuesdays are special at KAXE/KBXE. It’s the day we celebrate Phenology - the rhythmic biological nature of events as they relate to climate. Every week our resident phenologist John Latimer gathers messages from listeners in regard to what they are noticing outside. During the school year things get wildly more exciting when we hear from students all around the listening area as they send in their observations and questions!

This month we received reports from Baudette, the North Shore Community School, and the Long Lake Conservation Center!

Have questions or observations you'd like to share? Want to get your classroom involved in Phenology? Email John!

If you love that a program like the Phenology Show exists in the world, ensure its future with a contribution to Northern Community Radio!

As a mail carrier in rural Grand Rapids, Minn., for 35 years, John Latimer put his own stamp on a career that delivered more than letters. Indeed, while driving the hundred-mile round-trip daily route, he passed the time by observing and recording seasonal changes in nature, learning everything he could about the area’s weather, plants and animals, and becoming the go-to guy who could answer customers’ questions about what they were seeing in the environment.
