Holiday Charity
Susan speaks with Father Fred Kamer, president of Catholic Relief Services about a decrease in contributions to charity by Americans. He says that this decline in giving comes at a time when more people are requesting assistance from churches and other charitable organizations.
Movements Collide
Daniel explores reaction among the left and right wings within Israel with Yaron Ezrachi, a political theorist at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and Bob Lang a spokesperson from the West Bank settlers. Both say that the assassination of Rabin was abhorrant, but disagreed sharply on what course Israel should take vis-a-vis the Palestinians. 9:30 Funding Credit Cross Promo Station Break (:59) Forward Promo

Holiday Layoffs
NPR's David Molpus reports that, increasingly, corporate America is ready to lay off workers during the holiday season. While corporations say they're helping workers 'transition' out of their jobs, labor watchers say corporate America is no longer ashamed to openly treat workers as dispensible.
New Federalism
Jacki talks with Robert Dallek, professor of history at U-C-L-A. Ever since the Republican party took over the Congress, it has been intent on reducing the federal government's role and increasing the authority of states. Dallek says the trend toward "state's rights" is not a new one, it just fell out of favor during the Depression of the 1930's.
Naomi Gets Married
Jacki speaks with writer Naomi Wolf, who has written an essay squaring her feminist philosophy with the fact that, when she got married, she was totally sucked into the idea of a traditional wedding, complete with Victorian-style wedding dress. The essay is called "Brideland," and appears in a new book called Being Real (Doubleday).
Rabin Update
Daniel talks with NPR's Linda Gradstein who is in Jeruselem about the death of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He was shot at a peace rally in Jeruselem today.
Budget
Noah talks with NPR's Mara Liasson about the latest developments in the budget negotiations. Republican congresional leaders today called off scheduled budget talks at the White House, saying they want a "firm budget offer" from President Clinton that moves toward "bipartisan common ground." But Liasson says the White House is insisting the president already has shown flexibility.
Michigan Welfare
In his state-of-the-state address last night, Michigan Governor John Engler announced a new plan to move welfare recipients off the unemployment rolls in four counties and two other communities. NPR's Don Gonyea reports that unlike other states, Michigan's goal is to eliminate unemployment entirely among its welfare recipients, rather than just reduce it.
Whitewater
The White House aide who discovered missing billing records from Hillary Rodham Clinton's law firm says they suddenly appeared on a table in plain view. NPR's Jon Greenberg reports that the aide says she doesn't know who put them there. The records had been subpoenaed two years earlier by investigators who wanted to determine how much legal work Mrs. Clinton had done for a failed savings and loan owned by the Clinton's partner in the Whitewater real estate venture.
Presidential Persuasion
NPR's Jon Greenberg reports that President Bill Clinton used his weekly radio address to begin making the case for deploying American troops in Bosnia. Clinton said a deployment is in the best interests of American security and in keeping with the country's national values. Clinton urged Americans to support his plan to send 20,000 U.S. soldiers as part of a 60,000-strong NATO force that will try to guarantee peace in a land torn by four years of bloodshed, atrocities and ethnic cleansing.
Bushwackers
Jacki talks with this unusual group of musicians who, more than anything else, resemble a travelling troupe of medieval balladeers. Big Blow and the Bushwackers, as they're called, isn't a group restricted to the normal collection of musical instruments rather they draw on anything that makes sound - be it trash or their own bodies. The Bushwackers love to perform live but they have made it into a studio to produce a couple of cd's on Wedgie Records. Their latest studio effort is called "Habagoola" and is available by calling 1-800- 394-1140.
Andreotti Trial
Regina Sansalone reports from Rome on the trial of Italy's former Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti, and his alleged links to the Mafia. Tommaso Buscetta, the mafia informer whose testimony has implicated more than 300 mafia figures, said in court today that he knew of Adreotti's links to the mob more than 10 years ago.
Letters
Daniel dips into our electronic and regular mail bag and reads letters from listeners.
Raised By Wolves
Host Danny Zwerdling talks with Jim Goldberg about his photography exhibition "Raised By Wolves." For ten years, Goldberg photographed runaway kids in San Francisco and Hollywood. He's created a sad, yet compelling, document of kids in trouble. The photographs are currently at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.. Beginning early next year the exhibition travels to Andover (Ma.), Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Daytona Beach (Fl.). A companion book is published by Scalo press.
Haiti Update
A week ago, Haiti marked the one year anniversary of President Jean Bertrand Aristide's return to power. Daniel updates the situation in Haiti with New York Times reporter Larry Rohter, who recently visited Haiti.
I Love Winter
Noah Adams speaks with Rev. Jim Renfrew, pastor of Stone Church, Presbyterian Church in Bergen, NY, about the delights of winter. He says the steady snowfall quiets the city, and members of the community take extra time to look after each other.
