The annual poll finds for the first time that low funding for schools is listed as the number one problem. Poll respondents of both parties say that the federal government should give schools more money without no strings attached. They see Democrats as more friendly to public schools than Republicans in general, but they see Al Gore and George W. Bush as equally good for public schools.

NPR's Sarah Chayes reports from Basque country of northwest Spain on the recent wave of terrorist attacks by the ETA separatist movement. Thousands of Spaniards turned out today to the two latest victims -- two police officers killed by a bomb yesterday. Militants say ETA broke an 18-month cease-fire, because the government failed to make any overtures to the guerrillas during the truce. But moderate Basque politicians, including some who initially supported the ETA movement years ago, say extremists hijacked the separatist cause.

Some factors in the disruptions have been more people flying, bad weather and the limited capacity of airports and the air traffic control system. Some researchers have been advising parents to reduce the fat in their children's diets to reduce the kids' risk of developing heart disease. But young children -- especially infants -- need some fat in their diets for normal growth. Now, NPR's Jon Hamilton reports a study of a group of children indicates that low fat diets may NOT have a negative effect on their growth.

The two popes who will be elevated on the ladder toward sainthood influenced the Roman Catholic Church in very different ways. Pope Pius the Ninth is regarded by many as an arch-conservative, known for promulgating the doctrine of papal infallibility. He's also known as the pope who insisted a Jewish boy in Rome be raised a Catholic, against the wishes of the boy's parents. Pope John the Twenty-third, by contrast, is renowned for liberalizing the Church with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

Vice President Al Gore took a tour of a neighborhood pharmacy today in Tallahassee Florida, then met with about 150 senior citizens to talk about prescription drug costs. Gore told the seniors they ought to demand details from his presidential rival, Texas Gov. George W.Bush, who says he wants to help make prescription drugs affordable for all seniors. We hear excerpts from the campaign today.

NPR's Eric Weiner reports Australia is engaged in its largest peacetime security operation, in advance of the 2000 summer Olympics, in Sydney in two weeks. Australian security agencies are preparing for every possibility from hostage situations to biochemical warfare. Over the weekend, New Zealand police said they had uncovered a possible plot to target a nuclear plant near the Olympic site in Sydney. Australian officials are downplaying the incident as workers put finishing touches on the Olympic facilities. The government spent more than one-billion dollars on the construction. But Australians, known for their fierce enthusiasm for sports, are not complaining about footing the bill.

Bunny Austin, tennis star of the 1930's, has died at the age of 94. Austin -- teamed with Fred Perry -- won four Davis Cup finals in a row in the mid-30's. Austin was the first man to wear shorts at the All England Club at Wimbledon in 1934. Linda Wertheimer and Bud Collins, asports columnist for the Boston Globe and commentator for NBC, talk about Austin's career. Fewer flights are being cancelled by United Airlines now that it's reached a tentative settlement with its pilots. The airline is still negotiating a new contract with the union representing its mechanics and ground workers. But Chicago Public Radio's Jason DeRose reports the carrier is already striving to win back angry travelers.
