Gop & Populism
Robert talks with David Brooks, a senior editor of the The Weekly Standard, about the strong populist theme emerging from the Republicans on the campaign trail. Mr. Buchanan has long been associated with the populist movemment, but now Sen. Bob Dole is jumping in on the act. Dole attacked "corporate greed" yesterday in a speech. But Mr. Brooks questions how genuine Dole's new populist platform really is.
Nigerian In Exile
Linda talks to Dr. Owens Wiwa, a Nigerian exile, whose brother Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed in December. Saro-Wiwa was found guilty of inciting others - resulting in murder. How much does the average guy make? How much does he save? How fast can he run? How much T-V does he watch? Our figures come from current issue of Men's Health magazine.
Minority Lending
NPR's Melissa Block reports on a study of lending patterns that shows a remarkable rise in the numbers of mortgage loans given to minorities in 1994. Some credit the pressure of the Community Reinvestment Act, and regulators scrutinizing big bank mergers. Others note that the market is now favoring lower-income borrowers because the banks need their business.
Do You Care?

Boxing, Blood And Hiv
Noah talks with Marc Ratner, president of the Association of Boxing Commissions, about boxer Tommy Morrison, who publicly announced he has the AIDS virus. Ratner says Morrison's career is essentially over, that it is illegal for him to fight in Nevada, and that he hopes other states will follow suit. Boxing, he says, is a bloodsport, unlike other sports, and that HIV-positive athletes have no place in the ring if there is a chance, no matter how small, of transmission of the virus to another boxer or a ringside observer.
Pennsylvania Flooding
Noah talks with Larry Dunn, chairman of the Allegheny County Board of Commissioners. He describes the flooding in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. More rain is predicted.
Rule Of St. Benedict
We hear an excerpt from the Rule of Saint Benedict, who wrote a guide for monastic life in the sixth century. It is that Rule which the monks at Weston Priory follow to this day.
Who Is Lamar?
NPR's Kathleen Schalch has this profile of former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander, who has used a strong finish in the Iowa caucuses to emerge among the top three contenders to win Tuesday's New Hampshire primary. Alexander's surge in the polls has brought a new wave of media scrutiny and questions about whether Alexander's folksy, conservative image squares with his record.
Vermont Versus New Hampshire
(STEREO) - Linda visits people and politicians in the two neighboring New England states to find out why the aura around them is so different. Though they both have small, mostly rural populations, New Hampshire is conservative and anti-tax, while Vermont is seen as progressive on environmental and economic issues. Linda explores the historical and geological differences between the two states as well.

S.O.T.U.
Commentator Mickey Edwards says President Clinton's State of the Union Address proved that the Republicans have won! He posits that when a Democratic president stands before the nation and declares that big government is dead and Democrats stand to applaud, it's clear that the Republican call for less government has been heard and adopted by anyone seeking to lead this country.
. Rice-A-Roni
WHO'S TREAT IS IT ANYWAY? Roving commentator Bob Garfield went to San Francisco to explore the Rice-A-Roni saga.. and was stunned by what he discovered.

Native Orphans
Commentator Reynolds Price compares the English tradition of filming great works of literature with Hollywood's neglect of America's great writers. The three new Austen movies filmed in England are just the latest example of a country taking pride in its literary heritage. America could do the same with works like Cather's "A lost Lady," or Robert Stone's "A flag for Sunrise."
