Czech Dissident
Robert speaks with Jan (YAN) Kavan (KAH-van) - a former Czech member of parliament who was asked to resign more than 4 years ago because information found in his security file. It was believed that Mr. Kavan collaborated with the Old Communist government in the late 1960's against student dissidents. Mr. Kavan could not believe the allegations since he was a celebrated dissident himself. Today, in Prague....he was vindicated... the Justice Department exonerated Mr. Kavan of all allegations. And Mr. Kavan will now run for political office once again.
Peace Implementation
Danny speaks with NPR's Michael Goldfarb in London about the wrapup today of a 40 nation conference on how to rebuild Bosnia. The meeting set into motion the machinery to deal with such issues as refugee resettlement and finance. Overshadowing the event was a French threat to "hit" the Bosnian Serbs if the Serbs don't return two French flyers who were shot down in a NATO mission last summer.

Unbearable Bears
Reporter Ruby De Luna from member station KUOW in Seattle has this story about grizzly bears and Yellowstone National Park. The park has a grizzly-version of the "three strikes and you're out" rule, which ships bears out of the part if they bother humans three times.
Mexico Drugs
Alleged drug kingpin, Juan Garcia Abrego (AH-bray-go) is in jail today in Houston, awaiting arraignment on charges of overseeing the distribution of large amounts of cocaine and marijuana in the United States from a base in northern Mexico. Abrego, a U.S. citizen, was deported from Mexico yesterday after being seized by Mexican anti-drug agents. In the United States, the White House has hailed the arrest and deportation. But NPR's David Welna reports the incident has created controversy in Mexico, where Abrego is suspected of involvement in bribery and corruption at high levels of the Mexican government.

Storyteller Jay O'Callahan reminds us that today is the 222nd anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. On that day in 1773, colonists threw into Boston Harbor a shipload of tea which King George of England was trying to force down their throat.

Mining - Susan talks with Bob Keeley who works for the United Nations in the former Yugoslavia as a de-miner...he helps rid the countryside of landmines. There are an estimated 3 million plus landmines in the former Yugoslavia and are a main source of concern for troops heading there now as part of the NATO mission to Bosnia.

Russia, Then Haiti
There are elections in two far flung countries today...a parliamentary vote in Russia...and a presidential vote in Haiti. Susan talks about the voting first with NPR's Ann Garrels in Moscow, and then with NPR's David Welna in Port au Prince.
Israel/Syria Talks
NPR's Eric Weiner reports that Israel and Syria have agreed to resume peace negotiations. Secretary of State Warren Christopher announced today that the two sides would meet next week in Washington. Talks between Israel and Syria broke off six months ago.

Illinois Mental Health Care
NPR's Cheryl Corley reports from Chicago on the status of Illinois' public mental health system. Despite the dismal rating given to state mental health facilities, state officials maintain that their hospitals offer a clean and healthy environment for patients. There is a debate now materializing between mental health providers as to whether the state should administer care through state hospitals or smaller, community based facilities.

N-P-R's David Molpus reports on the mechanisms and machinations that exist in offices to decide who -- if anyone -- has to work on holidays. It used to be a simple system of seniority. That doesn't work anymore.

Alan Cheuse reviews the recently re-printed historical novel "The Keepers of the House" by Shirley Ann Grau. Grau was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1965 for this novel. The book is published by Louisiana State University and is part of the Voices of The South Series.

The suspended federal budget talks have reached at least one conclusion. Both sides will base their offers on assumptions about future economic trends as projected by the Congressional Budget Office. The director of the CBO, June O'Neill, came in as a Republican appointee, but NPR's Peter Kenyon says she has maintained the office's reputation for non-partisan forecasts.
Budget And Elections
NPR senior news anaylst Daniel Schorr says that the budget impasse may evolve into an election issue, as the talks aimed at resolving the shutdown fail to produce swift results and the prospect of another shutdown looms.
