Welfare Views
Welfare is likely to be one of most hotly debated issues of this Democratic Convention. We visit with some of the delegates from Michigan for their opinions on the president's recent annoucement to "end welfare as we know it." Michigan's Republican governor, John Engler, has long been an advocate of block grants and has instituted some welfare reform programs which some of the Democratic delegates think have worked on a small scale. Most of the delegates think that welfare reform is necessary and they are glad that Clinton at least signed some kind of reform package. Many say that this plan has some holes in its coverage...most notably health care, child care, and transportation issues for the poor...but that their main concern is with re-electing President Clinton and a Democratic Congress so that those problem areas can be restructured.
