Atlanta Gujaratis
Josh Levs of member station WABE reports that Indian American residents of the Atlanta area are mourning friends and relatives who perished in Friday's earthquake. They're also raising money and organizing relief efforts to assist the survivors. It's not clear how many have come from Gujarat to the Atlanta area. There are an estimated 40,000 Indian Americans in Atlanta. Community members say as many as 5,000 could be from Gujarat
Campaign Giving In Greenwich
NPR's Peter Overby reports that most political contributions come from very few people. One of the areas of the country that has among the highest concentration of big-time donors is Greenwich, Connecticut. Some say residents there get special attention in return from the political establishment, and campaign finance reformers would like to limit how much money candidates can get from people who do not live in the areas they represent.
Calexico Crossings
Deborah talks with Randy Stickles, the agent in charge of the Calexico station for the United States Border Patrol. They discuss the sharp increase in the number of illegal border crossings in that area. Stickles believes that it's the result of Operation Gatekeeper in San Diego, which is approximately one hundred miles west of Calexico. Operation Gatekeeper has dramatically reduced the number of illegal crossings near San Diego...but illegal immigration simply seems to be shifting to areas not as heavily patrolled. They also discuss the increase in the seizures of marijuana coming across the border...Stickles estimates that the numbers have doubled in the last year.
Immigrant Wins Award For Scholarship Work
A Mexican immigrant gardener in the Bay Area has just been awarded a $100,000 National Purpose Prize for his work raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to send Hispanic kids to college. Catalino Tapia saved all his money to send his son to college. When his son graduated, he got the idea to create Bay Area Gardeners Foundation to help other Hispanic youth get a college education.

Keepers Of The House
Alan Cheuse reviews the recently re-printed historical novel "The Keepers of the House" by Shirley Ann Grau. Grau was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1965 for this novel. The book is published by Louisiana State University and is part of the Voices of The South Series.
