Truthsquad: Foreign Policy
NPR's Ted Clark reports that in Sunday's presidential debate Robert Dole tripped up on the facts in criticizing President Clinton's handling of foreign policy. Dole's biggest error was in accusing Clinton of being the US president who had sent the most troops abroad in history, a fact which he should have known was wrong from his own service overseas in World War II. But Clinton too stretched the truth some, taking credit for foreign policy successes in Europe that more rightly belonged to his predecessor, President Bush.

Commentator Marianne Jennings has had it up to here with the proliferation of web sites...do we really need this many? Everyone--from the FBI to the makers of Gatorade--is getting into the act. As she navigates the treacherous surf of www.com, she wonders if one can still get information the old fashioned way.

Election Ads
The campaign reform group Common Cause today asked for an independent counsel to investigate what it called "an illegal scheme" on the part of both the Republican and Democratic parties to circumvent campaign finance laws by buying television ads that presidential candidates Bob Dole and President Clinton should have paid for, because the ads weren't for party-building, but were meant to support the candidates. NPR's Peter Overby reports.

South Dakota Senate Race
The contest between veteran Republican Senator Larry Pressler and his Democratic challenger Rep. Tim Johnson features what most people would define as everything good and everything bad about politics today. The candidates present voters with clear cut ideological choices on issues from taxes...Pressler is solidly in favor of "smaller government"...to the Farm Bill (Senator Pressler is highly in favor of the changes that were made in the Farm Bill, while Rep. Johnson has been less enthusiastic). Both candidates have held serious issue debates, even as they lob harshly negative ads at one another. NPR's Brian Naylor traveled to South Dakota and filed this report.
Zak Forrest Productions
- Daniel visits 15-year-old Zak Forrest, who just won the grand prize in a nationwide American Film Institute contest with his two-and-a-half minute film called "Saturday." Zak shot the film himself and did all the editing on his computer. TV and movie actor Tim Allen was one of the judges in the contest...Danny talks with him about the film, and about the advances in technology that make filmmaking accessible to more people.
Enviro
Lobbies - NPR's Kathy Schalch reports that the environmental lobby is focusing its campaign contributions on about 12 Congressional races, in an effort to make for a more environment-friendly legislature after the November election.
Chemical Exposure: How Big
NPR's Martha RAddatz reports that the Pentagon has had to deal with delays in its attempts to identify the number of US soldiers that may have been exposed to chemical weapons during the Persian Gulf War. It seems that the computer model the government is using may need more work.
Convention Love/Hate
Comedian Will Durst sees the futility of getting real news out of a convention, but he loves the scene surrounding the whole event anyway.
Deficit
The federal government's budget deficit was a big campaign issue four years ago, but this time around it seems to have faded, partly because both parties have taken balanced budget pledges, but also because the deficit is much smaller now. NPR's John Ydstie reports that budget experts say the deficit may be down, but it's not out.
Benediction
Monday's benediction at the Democratic National Convention was delivered by the Rev. Dr. Vashti [VAH-shtee] McKenzie, pastor of the Paine Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dole
NPR is participating in a program along with other televesion and radio news outlets that provides free airtime to the Presidential campaigns of Bob Dole and Bill Clinton. Tonight's message comes from Presidential challenger Bob Dole.
Political Archeology
-Danny talks to Neil Silberman, author of "Between Past and Presest," about the politics of archaeology. Silberman says the recent clashes in Jerusalem over a deicison to open a tunnel alongside the biblical Temple Mount are only the latert manifestation of the use of archeology as a weapon in the war for national identity and sovereignty He provides similar examples from Greece, Bosnia and. . . lower Manhatrtan.
Ice Avoidance
This week, Chicago's O'Hare airport joins New York's LaGuardia airport in a test of a new weather prediction system that's designed to keep ice off planes in the air and on the ground. Aviation experts say it will keep planes flying on time and improve safety too. NPR's Christopher Joyce reports.
Documents Explained
Lanny Davis, White House Special Counsel, talks to Linda about today's document release. They also discuss the White House strategy for addressing the number of questions regarding fund-raising practices, and the blurring of lines between White House business and DNC business.
Citizen Ruth
Critic Bob Mondello reviews the new film "Citizen Ruth." The film is a comedy about a serious subject...abortion. Mondello says that it's remarkably even-handed and doesn't require the viewer to choose which side of the abortion debate to agree with. It's the first film from director Alexander Payne, and stars Laura Dern.

T.V. Ratings
NPR's Brooke Gladstone offers a progress report on television industry efforts to come up with a ratings system for its programming. The giant telecommunications law passed last year gave television a year to devise a plan of its own or face one imposed by the federal government. Although a final announcement on the ratings system isn't scheduled until later this month, details are filtering out. And some lawmakers and parents' advocates don't like what they're hearing.

Estrogen and Alcohol
Women taking estrogen may be taking a risk if they also drink alcohol. For reasons yet to be determined, one or two drinks can increase the amount of estrogen circulating in the blood. And high levels of estrogen have been linked to an increase in breast cancer, though that link has never been conclusively proved. NPR's Vicky Que reports.
