Lebanese In Liberia
NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports on how the war in Liberia has affected the country's Lebanese community. The Lebanese have been in Liberia for about a hundred years, and they control much of business. The war has driven most of the original community of fifteen thousand Lebanese out of the country. About two hundred are holding out, however, including two Lebanese who have kept the capital's only hotel running despite the city's plunge into anarchy over the past month.
. Mitsubishi Rally
Mitsubishi Motors shut down two assembly-line shifts today and paid for more than two thousand workers to travel to Chicago and protest an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sexual harassment lawsuit against the company. NPR's Cheryl Corley reports that the company-sponsored rally is unprecedented.
Plo Charter
NPR's Linda Gradstein reports on the vote by the Palistinian parliament-in-exile to revoke sections of the PLO charter calling for Israel's destruction. The vote, which was boycotted by radical members of the PLO, was hailed by Israel as an historic move.

Artie Shaw
Clarinetist, bandleader, and curmudgeon...but kind of a right-on curmudgeon. Shaw quit playing music more than thirty years ago...just when he had what most might consider "it all": money, fame, beautiful wives (lots of them). Now he lives alone and writes novels and short stories. Dean Olsher visited him at home and has this report.
Talks In Syria
Robert talks with Brian Hanrahan of the BBC about Secretary of State Warren Christopher's trip to Syria. Christopher met with Syrian President Hafez Assad in Damascus to discuss the possibility of securing a ceasefire in Lebanon. President Clinton sent Christopher on a diplomatic shuttle to the Middle East after Israeli shelling killed more than 100 Lebanese civilians last Thursday.
. Indiana Basketball
Noah talks with Bobby Plump, who scored the winning shot in the 1954 Milan Indiana high school basketball championship which was the depicted in the movie "Hoosiers". Plump organized the group "Friends of Hoosier Hysteria," to fight against a change in the traditional one-class tournament system. The group lost its fight today when the Indiana High School Athletic Association voted today to change to a multi class tournament format based on school enrollment.
Peres Visit
Robert Siegel talks with NPR's Ted Clark about the visit of Israeli Prime Minister to the White House. President Clinton and Prime Minister Peres are considering increased cooperation between the US and Isreal along with continuing joint efforts to fight terrorism.
. Net World
Noah talks to Fred Davis, a computer consultant and author of "Windows '95 Bible." Davis is at the Internet World conference in San Jose, California. He says that the big new technologies at the convention talk... they allow voice conversations, like phone conversations, over the Internet. The URL for the convention is HTTP://www.iworld.com/
Bay Of Pigs
NPR's Neal Conan reports that today is the 35th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs fiasco. On April 17, 1961, a brigade of Cuban volunteers trained by the Central Intelligence Agency landed at a remote spot on the southern coast of Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro. The bungled invasion was a military and political disaster for the United States and President John F. Kennedy. And, while the Cold War is now over, the Bay of Pigs remains a rallying cry for the Castro regime, which still uses the threat of American intervention to justify political repression.
Domestic Partner Benefits
NPR's David Molpus reports that only a tiny fraction of U.S. businesses extend benefits to "domestic partners," but in recent years that has started to change. Several hundred businesses have discovered that they can expand the traditional definition of family...and not hurt the bottom line.
Horseman On The Roof
Bob Mondello reviews HORSEMAN ON THE ROOF, a movie that's literally about love in the time of cholera. It's a swashbuckling romance from the director of CYRANO DE BERGERAC.
Unabomber And Earth First
After the Oklahoma City bombing, the country suddenly took note of the rhetoric coming from far-right radical groups such as the numerous citizen militias and separatists such as the Posse Comitatus. Now, reports NPR's Howard Berkes, similar links are being made between the suspected Unabomber and the inflammatory language of some radical environmental groups.
Big Stick Diplomacy
NPR's Tom Gjelten reports that America's role in bringing about a ceasefire in Lebanon teaches us that multilateral diplomacy is on the wane, and big stick diplomacy is in. It is the world's superpower, the U.S., Gjelten says, that other nations turn to when they want diplomatic assistance.
Young Felons
NPR's Richard Gonzales reports on the six year old boy in California who has been charged with attempted murder in the near beating death of a one month old baby. Authorities aren't yet releasing the boy's name but they say he's the youngest person ever to be charged with a felony.
Mental Illness
This past week, the Senate passed it's version of the Health Care Reform bill. It includes a measure that would require insurance companies to cover mental health costs in a manner comparable to coverage of physical health care. The measure attempts to remedy what activist groups claim is discrimination against people with mental health disabilities. Daniel speaks with Shelley Jackson who is a staff attorney at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. She says there are widespread instances of discrimination against people with mental health disabilities, particularly in the workplace.

Montgomery County Schools
NPR's Claudio Sanchez reports that while many politicians and educators are busily trying to get American schools to work harder at producing students who can compete in the international marketplace, some parents are concerned that their kids are working too hard. They fear the pressure to complete large homework assignments and to get ahead in school is destroying their children's love for learning, and is turning childhood into an ordeal.

Missile Defense
NPR's John Nielsen reports that the United States and Israel have agreed to install a new set of anti-missile defenses in Israel, as part of an effort to keep enemy rockets from ever hitting Israeli soil. Recent attempts to bomb the hiding places of Hezbollah guerillas firing rockets at Israel have had one disastrous side effect--heavy civilian casualties. That seems to be one of the reasons why Israel and the United States will rush to finish testing and installing an anti-missile system whose key components exist only as prototypes.
