Preval will have to deal with Haiti's economic woes, as well as a potentially unstable security situation when U.N. peacekeeping forces leave the island, possibly as early as the end of this month. Welna says Preval also will have to contend with Aristide, whom many Haitians regard as the once and future president.

They are Desmond Barrit, who plays Bottom, and Lindsay Duncan, who plays Titantia. Barrit was an accountant until he was 35 years old and then became on actor on a bet.

Linda talks with Jeff Edwards, fire marshall of Parker County, Texas, about the fires that have been burning out of control just west of Forth Worth. Speaking from Poolville, Texas, Edwards says firefighters have contained one blaze that has destroyed 20,000 acres but worries about two more fire that are still burning.

NPR's Joe Palca reports that physicists have found evidence challenging the assumption that fundamental particles called "top quarks" can't be divided into yet smaller structures. Researchers at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Ill., were surprised to find indications that quarks have internal structures. If this turns out to be true, it would contradict the Standard Model that physicists have long used to explain the basic structure of all matter. 17. MAYBE VOOM -- A reading from "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back" by Dr. Seuss. The cat, you'll remember, comes back to reveal another cat under his hat, who has another cat under his hat, who has another cat, and so-on. The cats get smaller until there's only VOOM left.

He says the current system, in which members of Congress spend much of their time raising funds, is one of the reasons many of our best lawmakers are leaving public office.

Producers Ginna Allison and T.J. Meekins sent us this piece about Rose Maddox, who's known as the grandmother of rockabilly music. Rose got her start in the 1930s, when she was just 11 years old. She went on to perform with country greats like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. And this week, her latest album is up for a Grammy.

Alan Cheuse reviews a massive historical novel by Czech emigre writer Josef Skvorecky (YO-sef shuh-VOR-ress-kee). Jacki talks with Hal Seamon, deputy executive director of the National School Boards Association. President Clinton today supported the concept of requiring kids to wear school uniforms, although he said the requirement should be imposed by local school boards and not the federal government. Seamon supports the idea and says places that HAVE school uniforms are seeing a positive change in student behavior.
