Travis Verdegan, fire predictive services coordinator, discusses how the DNR makes forest fire decisions. The "Fire in MN forests" series is produced by Mark Jacobs.

KAXE's Tuesday Morning Show strives to take an in-depth look at some natural resource-based issues important to Northern Minnesota. Producer Mark Jacobs and hosts Heidi Holtan and John Latimer discuss the problems and highlight some creative solutions.

Forest fires have been part of our forest ecosystem for thousands of years. With modern day human development in Northern Minnesota, however, fire suppression is critical to protect property and lives. But firefighting equipment and personnel are limited and thus can’t be everywhere at once. That’s where Fire Predictive Services comes in: To prioritize high risk situations and locations.

Travis Verdegan, Minnesota DNR fire predictive services coordinator, joined the KAXE Morning Show to talk about the process and tools used to make these forest fire related decisions.
