Gwen Westerman is a writer, poet and artist. She teaches literature and writing at Minnesota State University Mankato. And she’s a member of the Sisseton Whapeton Dakota O-ya-de tribe and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Her 2013 book of poems, Follow the Blackbirds, is perceptive and poignant, full of vivid stories and reflections on the past. Her vision and craft finally been more widely recognized -- at a press conference on Sept 9th, Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flannagan named Dr. Gwen Westerman Minnesota’s newest, and first Native American, poet laureate.
