Welcome To A New Sound for Weekends on KAXE/KBXE

Tune in this Saturday at 9am , Sunday at 6am and 8pm for The Give and Take.  Sarah Bignall brings you conversations with General Manager Maggie Montgomery and Music Director Kari Hedlund to introduce you to new weekend programming.

Have you heard?   Weekends are about to get a make-over on KAXE/KBXE.  And like any good makeover, we asked for your input - and we kept the programming you love and created a haircut and lip color that we think you'll love.  Weekends will have the feel of northern Minnesota - with many more local voices in the line-up and a greater exploration of new music shows with America at the core.

So what's new?

Our music program on the weekends is getting a new name.  AMERICA AVENUE.  Place is essential to our programming - from kids on phenology to announcements of community events - to conversations with locals about the things that matter to them, you HEAR northern MN.  New weekend programming will bring you more local content where you will continue to hear  the talented volunteers who bring their own special charm to music programs. And, AMERICA AVENUE just happens to be the address of our KBXE studio in downtown Bemidji.  Check it out:

Back Porch on America Avenue:  Backporch is one of KAXE/KBXE's longest running programs that has been heard on many different days/times over the years.  This time we'll get the weekend rolling Saturday at 10am...your Saturday morning road trip or chores in the barn will get a little hitch in your getalong.  Volunteers will bring us a great old timey feel as they continue to combine the sounds of bluegrass, old-time and classic country sounds.  Think Trampled by Turtles meets Ralph Stanley and Hazel Dickens with a pinch of Johnny Cash and Margo Price.

Americana on America Avenue: Tune in at 5pm Saturdays for a special blend of rootsy rock, folk, R&B, blues, and alternative country music for a northern Minnesota evening. Think John Prine, Neko Case and Bob Dylan.  Old Crow Medicine Show, Actual Wolf and Gary Clark Jr or First Aid Kit - Wilco, Reina del Cid ,Brandi Carlile and Corey Medina.

Brunch on America Avenue: Tune in Sunday mornings at 10 and grab some coffee, eggs or pancakes, and we’ll add a side dish of soul, rhythm and blues, and gospel tunes.  We're talking Booker T. and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.  Gladys Knight and Charles Bradley.  Mavis and Pops Staples and Odetta.

Jazz on America Avenue: 6pm on Sundays is your chance to explore “America’s own classical music”. Enjoy old and new, traditional and contemporary jazz.  Miles and Django.  Ella Fitzgerald and Cecile McLorin Salvant and Minnesota jazz greats like Sam Miltich and Connie Evingson.

The Edge of America Avenue:  8pm on Sundays we are pushing boundaries.  You will find new
sounds, new ideas, and new artists. From native hop hop to indie rock, techno, world music, or...something else!  It’s a full hour of fresh music, each week.

Othering programming on KAXE/KBXE weekends:

Dig Deep/Let's Visit/What We're Reading/The Give and Take will continue to bring you local stories.  Look for the Local Rotation on our schedule - Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9 and Sunday evenings at 9.

Stay Human with Michael Goldberg will continue to provoke ideas and creativity.  Tune in Sundays at 5pm, following NPR's All Things Considered.

You'll also continue to hear American Routes, Green Cheese, Mixtape, New Music, Great Northern Radio Show, Weekend Morning Edition and TedTalks Radio.

We're also excited to discover new ideas on Sunday nights at 10pm with Big Picture Science.

Our new programs begin Saturday March 2nd.  Give it a try!  And let us know what you think!

Thanks to everyone who has taken our surveys and joined us for programming conversations.  We asked and you let us know what you wanted!
