Weekly Phenology Report

Sue Keeler via KAXE-KBXE Season Watch Facebook page
Ma & Pa Pileated by Sue Keeler

John Latimer gives a full, weekly phenology report every Tuesday.  Looking  back in his 30+ years of phenology journals, John compares old observations with what’s happening in the natural world today and connects that information with personal experiences of his own and others in the region.

This week he talks about wolves, fox and coyotes preparing for mating season, a recent hiking trip to Sax-Zim Bogwhere he observed a variety of birds including evening grosbeaks, chickadees,  and woodpeckers, and the subtle and powerful changes taking place in the trees and bushes of the area!    John also heard his first black capped chickadee singing its phoebe song this week and caught a glimpse of a long-tailed weasel!

Spring is coming, folks!  The phenological signs are all around us.  What have you noticed?

To share a comment,   question  or an observation  in regard to phenology, leave a message on our talkback line by calling 218.999.9876 or email the station or send a note to John directly.  We love hearing from people!

As a mail carrier in rural Grand Rapids, Minn., for 35 years, John Latimer put his own stamp on a career that delivered more than letters. Indeed, while driving the hundred-mile round-trip daily route, he passed the time by observing and recording seasonal changes in nature, learning everything he could about the area’s weather, plants and animals, and becoming the go-to guy who could answer customers’ questions about what they were seeing in the environment.
