Nick and Ren Howl of Between Howls.

Ren and Nick Howl of the band stopped by "Headwaters" on June 6, 2025.

GRAND RAPIDS — On March 20, rock, folk and soul duo Between Howls released their terrific debut album, Cabin Fever.

In support of the album, the pair toured the country in their trusty van "Blue Magoo" (a 1999 Chevy Express), traveling over 6,000 miles to 20 cities and hitting all four time zones of the contiguous United States.

Not long after their return to home in Northern Minnesota, they played the KAXE-sponsored side stage at Festival Rialto in Grand Rapids.

In the leadup to the fest, Ren and Nick Howl stopped by Headwaters to chat about their history, the inspiration behind the album, the importance of a trusty touring vehicle and much more.

Malachy started his radio career in 2017 at a college radio station, where he played weird music in the middle of the night to possibly no one. On a good night maybe his parents were listening. Nonetheless, he was hooked on public radio and is still doing it today.

He joined Northern Community Radio in 2022, where he gets to share his passion for local music as Producer of Minnesota Mixtape, an all Minnesota music show airing Fridays at 10 a.m. and Saturdays at 3 p.m. You can also find him hosting Headwaters and curating The Setlist.
