KAXE's weekly Minnesota live music spotlight features MorningBird, FINICK, Annie Humphrey and Corey Medina & Brothers, and the Jason Waldron Band.

Welcome to our first edition of The Setlist, where we will give weekly updates on live music events that we think you should know about.

One of the best ways to support our music scene is to get out there and see some live music! Luckily, there is a lot happening around the area, which means we won't be able to cover it all on this segment.

The Setlist is curated by the KAXE Music Team and is meant to draw attention to the shows we find especially interesting or noteworthy.

We hope you enjoy, and say hi if you see us at a show.

MorningBird are a folk-trio from Hibbing featuring Jill Burkes, Rob Wheeler and Josh Palmi. The group is playing Thursdays at 5 p.m. in January and February at Smoke On The Water in Coleraine. They recently finished recording their debut album, due out in the spring of 2024.

Giants Ridge in Biwabik is hosting a winter music series through early March at its Burnt Onion Kitchen & Brews. Shows will be Saturdays at 3 p.m., with an additional performance Friday, Jan. 12, from FINICK, an indie-folk singer from Minneapolis who released her debut album in 2023.

We will primarily be featuring shows from around our listening area on The Setlist, but we want to shout out some of our finest Northern Minnesota musicians who will be representing the area in Minneapolis this weekend. Corey Medina & Brothers and Annie Humphrey are playing 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis.

Our final featured show of the week is classic country in Floodwood. The Jason Waldron Band is playing a late night show at the Savanna Portage Restaurant & Bar at 9 p.m. Saturday evening. From Effie, Minnesota, Waldron is joined in the band by his son Blake.

Malachy started his radio career at a college radio station, where he played weird music in the middle of the night to possibly no one. On a good night maybe his parents were listening. Nonetheless, he was hooked on public radio and is still doing it today. He joined Northern Community Radio in 2022, where he gets to share his passion for local music as Producer of Centerstage Minnesota, an all Minnesota music show airing Fridays at 2pm.
