1 person dead after shooting involving Red Lake Tribal Police officer

Federal officials told the Minnesota Star Tribune that a person firing a gun was fatally shot during an encounter with police on Aug. 13, 2026.

RED LAKE — The FBI reported one person is dead after a Red Lake Tribal Police officer fired their weapon in a Thursday, Aug. 13, incident within the Red Lake Nation.

A Thursday news release from the Red Lake Tribal Council stated the incident remains under investigation in coordination with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported it received a statement from the FBI with a few more details.

"A Red Lake Police Department officer discharged his service weapon at a suspect," the statement read. "That person later died."

KAXE's requests for comment from the FBI and the Red Lake Tribal Council's legal department were not returned as of Friday afternoon.

Authorities in Red Lake state there is no immediate threat to the public.

"We understand the concern an incident of this nature may cause within our community," the agency wrote. "We ask our members and residents to remain patient and respectful while law enforcement conducts a thorough investigation and to refrain from speculation as the investigative process continues."
