A 2025 inspection found the company failed to maintain equipment that monitored and reduced air pollution.

AITKIN — An Aitkin peat processor must pay more than $12,000 in fines for failing to maintain equipment designed to monitor and reduce air pollution.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency inspected American Peat Technology’s facility on June 26, 2025.

During the inspection, it found that the company failed to keep inventory of required spare parts for equipment that controls emissions. Staff also failed to inspect equipment on the required annual, quarterly and monthly scheduled, as well as calibrate the equipment on schedule. The MPCA also found the setup of the equipment’s alarm system prevented proper monitoring.

In addition to the fine, American Peat Technology also agreed to immediately begin its required equipment inspections and update its operations and maintenance plan.
