VIRGINIA — One man is recovering from minor injuries after he and a companion were rescued from a mine pit off the Mesabi Trail on Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Virginia Fire Department responded to the Mesabi Bike Trail Access Point in Virginia around 4:30 p.m. on the report of a man who fell down a 100-foot cliff into a mine pit lake.
First responders heard two men calling for help, with one clinging to the cliff about 50 feet down, and the other at the water's level about 100 feet down, with reported injuries.
Using high-angle rescue techniques, a Virginia firefighter rappelled down to the first man, who was able to climb out with the assistance of the rescuer.
Virginia firefighters used a boat to rescue the second man with injuries out of the mine pit. He was transported to Essentia Health-Virginia for treatment.
