DULUTH — If severe storms develop Tuesday night, July 22, over Northern Minnesota, they could bring winds reaching 70 mph and 1.5-inch hail.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Duluth also noted the possibility of heavy rainfall and flooding, with multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms expected through Thursday.
There's a 50%-70% chance of most locations across the Northland to see at least 1 inch of rain by Thursday. Locally heavier amounts of 3 inches or more are likely. The weather service issued a flood watch for much of the region from 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday morning, noting heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding.
This heavy rainfall may fall on top of already saturated soils from other recent heavy rainfall and lead to excessive runoff. The cities of Brainerd and Aitkin and surrounding areas may see between 1.5-2 inches, while Moose Lake could receive 2-3 inches.
Dime-sized hail was reported in northern Aitkin County earlier Tuesday during the first round of storms.
Long range signals are showing that the region's active stretch of weather isn't over after Thursday. There is a moderate risk of heavy precipitation in late July and early August across portions of the area, the weather service reported.
"Placement and timing is inherently uncertain this far out, be prepared for more talk of heavy rain and possible flooding to return," an update stated.
