BEMIDJI — A Cass Lake man is facing a second-degree murder charge after an apparent stabbing Sunday, June 15, in Beltrami County that left another man dead.
In a criminal complaint filed Tuesday, prosecutors allege Avery Cadwell, 21, stabbed his neighbor, Codi Brown, 28, north of Cass Lake while he was traveling through the area on an ATV.
Cadwell reportedly harbored some resentment toward Brown over a $100 debt. Witnesses overheard him stating that he was “going to get” Brown when he either saw or heard him ride by.
Another neighbor reported seeing the assault and said Brown rode away a short distance on the ATV before he collapsed.
The Medical Examiner’s provisional report indicates the cause of Brown's death was a stab wound less than 2 inches deep that penetrated his heart.
Cadwell made his first court appearance Tuesday and will make his next appearance Monday. Unconditional bail was set at $2 million.
