DULUTH — Second Harvest Northland, a regional food bank serving Northeastern Minnesota, kicked off its $20 million fundraising campaign Thursday, Feb. 27.
In a news release, the food bank said the public phase of the "Nourish the Northland" capital campaign is the last part of its construction and renovation project at its new building in Duluth.
Since 2022, the food bank secured $11 million needed for the project.
"The vision for this project is to increase the amount and variety of food available to our agency and community partners and neighbors experiencing hunger,” stated Second Harvest Northland President/CEO Shaye Moris in the release.
“Our goal is to increase our food distribution from 11 million meals annually today to more than 16 million by 2032 throughout our 15-county region. This is our food bank of the future.”
More than $1 million was announced in matching gifts for individual, business and volunteer contributions to the capital campaign.
The renovations so far have expanded capacity for both cold and dry food storage and built a drive-thru for food shelf clients, with plans to renovate a volunteer and community outreach center and create a "market” for a more grocery-store style setting.
Second Harvest Northland is the region’s only food bank, accessing nationally and regionally donated food for about 70,000 food-insecure children, seniors and adults in the 15-county region.
