WHITE EARTH — Two people were cited for ricing violations after being rescued Tuesday, Sept. 10, from Lower Rice Lake on the White Earth Reservation.
The White Earth Tribal Police Department reported it has responded to numerous lost people near Lower Rice Lake within the last 24 hours.
The agency said in a news release it deploys its airboat as a last resort while operating on rice-containing waters, but Tuesday night, it was used to successfully rescue two people from the river area near Highway 200.
They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and also cited for violating ricing regulations, as non-enrolled tribal members.
The tribal police said following state and tribal guidelines and regulations preserves natural resources and keeps people safe. Ricers should always let someone know their whereabouts and planned return time.
Carrying essential safety gear like a cellphone in a waterproof container and remaining with the watercraft out in the open is also advised.
