James Loud, one of the Red Lake Nation's seven hereditary chiefs, died on Aug. 26, 2024, at the age of 80.

James "Jim" Loud died Monday, Aug. 26, with services in Mahnomen and Redby this week.

RED LAKE — Flags are being flown at half-staff on the Red Lake Nation in honor of the recent passing of one of the seven hereditary chiefs.

James “Jim” Loud died in Mahnomen on Monday, Aug. 26, at the age of 80.

Red Lake’s hereditary chiefs are the descendants of the seven who negotiated land agreements between Red Lake and the United States. They refused to allow the government to break up their reservation in 1889 and Red Lake is one of the only tribal nations in the country that has what’s considered a “closed” reservation, where its remaining territories have never left tribal control.

Red Lake Chairman Darrell Seki said all flags will fly at half-staff at all Tribal buildings and properties until further notice, extending “heartfelt condolences to Loud’s family.”

Loud’s visitation is Wednesday at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Mahnomen, with a funeral service to follow Thursday at the Oshkimaajitahah Center in Redby.
