The United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is offering financial support to residents recovering from recent flooding. The organization is still raising money to meet its goal.

CHISHOLM — Financial support for households recovering from the impacts of last month’s flooding is now available through the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota.

Impacted residents can request up to $1,500 to apply toward flood-related bills, replace damaged appliances or purchase building materials.

The United Way branch is working with local suppliers for its flood recovery program, including Cook Building Center, Keenan’s TV and Appliance Center, Menards, Perpich TV and Pohaki Lumber.

In a news release, the organization’s executive director said the fund has come together after weeks of communication with local residents, leaders and the American Red Cross.

“As soon as flooding started, we sprang to action to do what we do best — fill gaps to meet critical needs,” said Executive Director Erin Shay. “As members of our team were cleaning out their own basements, others began delivering supplies.”

The highest unmet need, according to United Way, is financial assistance. Insurance coverage for many residents did not cover the cost of damages.

The organization has raised more than $60,000 of a $100,000 goal for the flood relief fund. It will continue to raise additional funds while distributing to affected residents.

Those in need are required to apply and provide proof of residence during the flooding, verification of damage and a demonstration of need.
