MOOSE LAKE — A 21-year-old Pengilly man was arrested on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide after he allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian while drunk driving.
The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene Thursday afternoon, March 21, on Highway 73 in Moose Lake after receiving a report of a person lying in the ditch who may have been hit.
Moose Lake fire personnel and Essentia Health medical staff attempted to resuscitate the pedestrian at the scene, but it was unsuccessful.
Authorities located the driver a short time later and detained him while the investigation was underway. He was arrested and transported to Carlton County Jail. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The identity of the pedestrian was withheld pending notification of family.
The suspect has not yet been officially charged in the fatal crash.
According to court records, the driver was convicted in 2023 in Itasca County for going 95 mph in a 60 mph zone, and earlier this year in Chisago County for texting while driving.
