ST. PAUL — The next flag of Minnesota has been selected. The state emblems redesign commission voted Tuesday on a final design that includes a conceptual shape of the state in dark blue, with the rest in a lighter blue, with an eight-pointed white star.

This is a modified version of the original submission known as F1953, with the modifications including changing the colors and the direction of the eight-pointed star.

The Commission also approved a modification to the new state seal, changing the number of yellow bars around the outer ring of the new seal to 98, representing 87 counties and 11 federally recognized tribal nations.

The Commission will meet again next week to discuss its final report, after the Legislature established it earlier this year to develop and adopt a new state seal and flag no later than Jan. 1.
