BEMIDJI — Through the end of the year, the community is invited to help fundraise to move a piece of locomotive history to the Beltrami County History Museum, in the renovated structure that was once the Great Northern Depot.
The Northern Iron Horse Model Railroad Society, currently responsible for maintaining the model trains at the museum, will undertake the transport and preservation of the life-sized caboose. According to Beltrami County Historical Society Executive Director Emily Thabes, the caboose will be open to visitors.
"This acquisition marks a momentous occasion for the Beltrami County Historical Society. The 1948 Great Northern Railway caboose is not just a steel structure; it is a tangible link to our community's past, a testament to the industrious spirit that continues to shape our county," Thabes stated in a news release.
The cost to move and preserve such a structure, according to the news release, is estimated to be $10,000 to $20,000.
Through Dec. 28, all donations will be matched, up to a total of $5,000.
Donations may be made in person at the History Center or online at https://dsnp.co/9SsI7c.
