ST. LOUIS COUNTY — A 5-year-old child has died after becoming stuck under a vehicle when it crashed and rolled yesterday afternoon in rural St. Louis County.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office received an iPhone crash alert shortly before 4 p.m. and a call from a citizen who stopped to help at the scene on Vermilion Trail, near Whiteface Reservoir.

Air medical and numerous fire departments and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad were dispatched to the crash site.

Lifesaving efforts on the child at the scene were unsuccessful.

An adult driver and another child in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and were transported to Essentia Health Northern Pines Hospital.

The sheriff's office reported the roads were packed with ice due to the recent snowfall and freezing temperatures.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the scene to assist in the crash investigation.
