HASSMAN — Locals take note: the work zone on Highway 169 in Aitkin County will be further restricted next week.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported crews will close the highway at the Mississippi River Monday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Aug. 18, to replace the bridge approach panels. Those who use the roadway for local access are advised to use the nearest alternative access to enter or exit the construction area.

“For your safety and ours, stay out of closed areas and never move road closure barricades,” the agency stated in a news release.

Progress made less than a month into the two-year, $36.2 million project between of Hassman and Aitkin.

Highway 169 remains a busy work zone between Hassman and the Mississippi River bridge with multiple crews and equipment. People were reminded to drive with caution as crews widen the road and place gravel, haul materials and replace underground pipes. Motorists should expect gravel surfaces and changes each day when slowly navigating through the work zone.

MnDOT reported the two-year project will reconstruct the road surface with a stronger, concrete overlay material; widen the shoulders, lengthen the turn lanes, and improve road access; and repair or replace drainage infrastructure.
