Mock crash planned May 1 in Walker ahead of prom season

WALKER — A mock crash scenario will be demonstrated for students Monday, May 1, in Walker.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported multiple public safety agencies will participate in the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School District event intended to share important safety messages ahead of prom and graduation season.

The event will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 1, with May 4 as an alternate date in the case of bad weather. The mock crash will be on Birchwood Avenue West.

“Please expect to see several first responders with lights and sirens in the area,” the sheriff’s office stated. “The City of Walker will be closing Birchwood Ave W for the event and asks that citizens avoid the area during the event.”

Participating are the sheriff’s office, Walker Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, Walker Fire Department, Hackensack First Responders, North Memorial Health Ambulance and North Memorial Health Air Care.

“The agencies involved are thankful to the WHA School District for helping host this opportunity and want to share that the goal of a mock crash event is to reduce crashes, injuries, and deaths involving younger drivers and their passengers by using visuals to demonstrate real-life consequences,” the news release stated. “Learning and awareness facilitates and encourages important traffic safety related dialogue between parents and teens and others.”
