GRAND RAPIDS — Collaboration can lead to a new way of making music.

The Cello Songs Project is made up of singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke and Rebecca Arons, cellist and producer. Both transplants from Massachusetts, they now call Minneapolis, a place with a vibrant music scene, their home.

The performance Friday, April 21, at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids will feature new arrangements of folk, pop and rock from Brooke’s catalog, plus new songs composed specifically for this project.

“Discovering Rebecca was like probably the best day of my life," Brooke said of her collaborator. "Because I've been obsessed with the cello forever and ever.

"It's such an incredible voice in the orchestra, but as a solo instrument as well. And it is like a human voice. When you pair it with a chick singer and a guitar, it's just this most gorgeous counterpoint and support system.”

When asked how they started working together, Brooke said, “I think it was a pandemic-necessitated desperate attempt to keep moving forward and making music but not get COVID.”
