Hi! I’m Heather Johnson, your membership coordinator here at KAXE / KBXE.
Most days, you can find me in the Bemidji studio chatting with members and volunteers or just grooving along to the radio while I type away.
This is not exactly a secret, but the “people” parts of my job are my favorite. I love learning more about KAXE’s members, even when they just call to update their credit cards. Sometimes I get to hear about pets or paintings in progress. Now and then, I get to share a chuckle about an unexpected event like a teenager vacuuming. These connections absolutely make my day. Getting to meet members face-to-face is even better, though!
On March 14, both KAXE in Grand Rapids and KBXE in Bemidji hosted a Pi(e) Day social, and for me, it was like a family reunion. Over just two hours, nearly 100 guests gathered in our studios for pie, coffee and conversation.
I watched new acquaintances settle in like old friends and caught snippets of conversations about music, fishing, babies and the best place to buy cheese (this was surprisingly controversial). Staff got to chat with members, volunteers and neighbors, and show new listeners a glimpse behind the scenes. This simple event was a perfect example of what we say on air each day: We are people-powered radio.
