John Owens is a freelance illustrator and teaches at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of the picture book One Summer Up North; his new book is called One Winter Up North. It’s a lovely and wordless picture book following a family’s journey through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in winter, snowshoeing the frozen lakes and silent forests, encountering the wonders of northern wildlife in the cold season. The book is illustrated with pencil and watercolor bringing out the lights and darks and patterns and textures, creating a visually poetic story.
