Zimbabwaean writer Petina Gappah’s new novel is called “Out of Darkness, Shining Light.” It’s the story of exploration and adventure in 19th c Africa, focusing on the men and women who carried the body of famed explorer and missionary Dr. Livingston across Africa so that his remains could be returned home to England--the story reminds us of the long-lasting effects of slavery and colonization, while celebrating the spirit of resilience.
