Marlena Myles is one of few Dakota women creating digital art. Her work highlights indigenous culture with aesthetic appeal and educational opportunities. In addition to gallery showings, her many projects include illustrations for the books Kikta Wo/Kikta Ye! and Thanku, Poems of Gratitude and the book cover design for Indian No More. She's created fabric designs, animated films, and even a coloring book of Dakota plants inspired by the writings of Henry David Thoreau that provides an opportunity for learning Dakota language and history. Her Dakota Land Maps illustrate the story of the past, present and future of Dakota people in their traditional homelands.
Marlena's work will be on exhibit thru the month of February at the MacRostie Art Center in Grand Rapids. We spoke with her on the morning show.
