Gaelynn Lea: breaking down barriers, promoting social change

Gaelynn Lea

Gaelynn Lea is a singer, a songwriter, a musician and a woman living with a disability.   Since the age of 2, her electric wheelchair has moved her through the world as a result of Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease.  For the past 24 years, she's been playing the violin.  Her profound talent has become a successful, globetrotting career as a musician.  In recent years, Gaelynn has become a passionate and public advocate for people with disabilities, promoting positive social change in terms of how individuals and societies understand the experience of living with disabilities. This weekend, Gaelynn will perform her music at the Iron Range Earth Fest and she will host a presentation titled "ABCs of Disability: Raising awareness, eliminating barriers and shaping cultures."

We spoke with Gaelynn on the morning show about her presentation, living with disability and how she hopes raising awareness about life with disabilities will improve the day to day experiences of all of us.   Her presentation "ABC's of Disabilities: Raising awareness, eliminating barriers and shaping cultures" happens at noon Saturday, April 22.  She'll be performing her music at 2p.m.
