The Verse Like Water program started by Central Lakes College instructor Jeff Johnson has been bringing world class American poets to the Brainerd Lakes region for the past five years. U.S. Poet Laureates, Pulitzer Prize Winners and National Book Award recipients are all included in the impressive list of Verse Like Water visiting poets. In this segment of Area Voices, Jeff Johnson tells of the colorful life and intense history of poet Luis J. Rodriguez. Living proof that a person can pull themselves out of the darkest situations, Rodriguez joined a gang in Los Angeles by the time he was 11 years old and later spent time in the same cell block as Charles Manson. These days, he travels the country sharing his poetry and inspiration. Luis J. Rodriguez, Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, CA will speak and share his poetry this Wednesday, March 29 at the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School at 8:45am and at the Chalberg Theater on the Central Lakes College Campus in Brainerd, MN at noon. The events are free and welcome everyone!
