Trampled by Turtles is joining the many Minnesota musicians looking to give back to their community. The band will play a rare, mid-afternoon pop-up show Saturday, Jan. 31, to raise money for the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund.
The show will be at the Turf Club in St. Paul at 1 p.m. with Bathtub Cig. It sold out almost immediately after it was announced on Wednesday.
The Immigrant Rapid Response Fund supports individuals and families by helping cover essentials like food and housing, as well as legal defense. In addition to donating 100% of the ticket proceeds, the band is also collecting donations of baby wipes, diapers, formula and other supplies, which will be distributed directly to people in need in the Twin Cities.
“It just feels like you have to do something, especially when it's right in our backyard,” said Grand Rapids' Tim Saxhaug, bassist of Trampled by Turtles, during a conversation with KAXE.
"We're using the one tool we have, which is music, to hopefully just get together everybody in a peaceful way, for everybody to try to help as much as they can and hopefully provide a little bit of a balm for a couple of hours," Saxhaug said.
Bathtub Cig will open the show, and attendees can expect a few surprise guests to join the band onstage, too, though details are under wraps. While Trampled by Turtles has played special shows at the Turf Club in the past, Saxhaug said it had been years since the full band performed there — and fitting the six members on the stage might be a challenge.
Although the concert is sold out, Saxhaug emphasized there are still many ways to help. Donations to the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund can be made online.
“Just give where you can,” Saxhaug said, “There are plenty of ways to help for sure.”
