Album of the Week: 11 by SAULT

Album cover for 11 by SAULT

11 by SAULT is our Album of the Week Feb 24 - Mar 2

SAULT have never played by music industry rules. For one, since the British music collective announced their presence in 2019, they have not played a single live show. They have also never given an interview. Their social media presence is minimal. Even their identities are unknown, with only a handful of credits appearing on their albums. The one thing the group has done, is consistently release high quality music that focuses on the Black experience.

On 11, one of five complete albums that SAULT released for free on the same day, the collective use love, religion, and togetherness as sources of empowerment and resilience. On opening song "Glory", two vocalists trade the lines "let the love set me free, close to you is where I wanna be".

On "Together", each verse speaks of a different activity done together. Dancing together, walking together, praying together, every time punctuated with the phrase "the strength is in us". This is done over a funky rhythm section and wah-wah guitar. It sounds like something you might find on a compilation of rare funk from Nigeria in the 70's.

Throughout the album, SAULT move effortlessly from one style of music to the next. There is R&B, classic soul, funk, gospel, and more. Whatever the style, it is music that you can feel, and it matches the uplifting lyrics from start to finish.

Listen to 11 all week long on Northern Community Radio.

Malachy started his radio career at a college radio station, where he played weird music in the middle of the night to possibly no one. On a good night maybe his parents were listening. Nonetheless, he was hooked on public radio and is still doing it today. He joined Northern Community Radio in 2022, where he gets to share his passion for local music as Producer of Centerstage Minnesota, an all Minnesota music show airing Fridays at 2pm.
